Chairman Rajiv Kumar is leading the succession process, with both internal and external candidates reportedly under consideration.

HDFC Bank has begun the process of identifying its next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, setting the stage for a major leadership transition at India’s largest private sector lender. Chairman Rajiv Kumar is reportedly playing a central role in the search. The succession exercise follows Sashidhar Jagdishan’s decision not to seek a third term as the bank’s MD and CEO. His current tenure is scheduled to end on October 26, 2026, bringing an end to his leadership of the bank after six years. According to reports, Rajiv Kumar has been working with members of HDFC Bank’s Nomination and Remuneration Committee to prepare a list of potential successors. The search reportedly includes both senior executives from within the bank and candidates from outside the organisation.

Among the prominent internal names is Kaizad Bharucha, HDFC Bank’s Deputy Managing Director. Bharucha is considered one of the leading internal contenders and has extensive experience across the bank’s retail and wholesale operations. The bank is also examining external candidates, with former State Bank of India chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara reportedly among those being considered. His four decade banking career and experience leading SBI have put his name in focus during the succession process. The choice of the next CEO is particularly important for HDFC Bank as it navigates a crucial period following its merger with HDFC Ltd.

The bank is under pressure to accelerate growth, improve returns and demonstrate the full benefits of the landmark merger. The leadership transition also comes after a period of governance related uncertainty at the bank. Former chairman Atanu Chakraborty resigned in March, while Jagdishan’s decision to step down has added further focus on the bank’s leadership structure. HDFC Bank’s shares have also faced pressure this year amid investor concerns over its performance and governance. The final appointment will require regulatory approval from the Reserve Bank of India. The bank is expected to put forward suitable candidates as it works towards ensuring a smooth transition before Jagdishan’s term concludes. With both experienced internal executives and heavyweight external candidates reportedly in contention, the HDFC Bank CEO race is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched leadership transitions in India’s banking sector this year.
