Drone Captures Terrifying Glacier Collapse Before Deadly Nepal Flash Floods!
A drone operated by a Chinese photographer accidentally recorded the dramatic collapse of ice and rock near Nepal’s Langtang Lirung peak.
A remarkable piece of drone footage has captured the moment a massive section of glacier and rock collapsed in the Himalayas shortly before devastating flash floods swept through parts of Nepal and Tibet. The footage, captured by a Chinese photographer, shows a huge mass breaking away from the mountain near the Langtang Lirung peak, which rises more than 7,200 metres above sea level. A massive cloud of dust can be seen spreading across the mountainside as the debris plunges towards the valley below. The collapse occurred on August 26 and is now considered a key event in understanding the catastrophic floods that followed.
Scientists believe the falling ice and rock may have temporarily blocked a river, creating a natural dam before the accumulated water and debris were suddenly released downstream. The resulting torrent swept through river systems including the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli, carrying enormous quantities of mud, rocks and debris. Roads, bridges, buildings and infrastructure were severely damaged across the affected region. The drone footage has provided researchers with valuable visual evidence as they work to reconstruct the sequence of events. Satellite imagery and seismic data had already pointed towards a major glacier and rock collapse, but the aerial video offers a rare view of the event itself.
The disaster has caused a massive humanitarian crisis, with hundreds of people killed and thousands reported missing across Nepal and Tibet. Rescue teams continue to search devastated areas, while damaged roads and difficult mountain terrain are making relief operations extremely challenging. The footage has also renewed attention on the growing instability of high altitude Himalayan terrain. Scientists have linked glacier retreat and warming temperatures to increasing risks in mountain environments, although the precise role of climate change in this particular collapse is still being studied. What began as an accidental recording has now become an important visual record of one of the most destructive natural disasters to hit the Nepal Tibet region in recent years.
