Subhash Chandra Eyes Startup Investments After NCLT Clears ₹6.5 Crore Repayment Plan

He says he may raise ₹2–4 crore from family and invest in promising startups with an investment partner in Switzerland.

Zee Group founder Subhash Chandra is planning his next business move after the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved a repayment plan in his personal insolvency case. Chandra has said he intends to explore startup investments and work with an investment professional based in Switzerland as he looks to rebuild his business interests. He is also considering borrowing between ₹2 crore and ₹4 crore from family members to invest in startups that he believes have growth potential. The plans come shortly after the NCLT approved a resolution under which creditors will receive around ₹6.5 crore against admitted claims of approximately ₹22,006.57 crore.

The approved amount represents only a small fraction of the total claims, with creditors recovering roughly 0.03%. Chandra has defended the resolution, saying he had already sold or monetised family and personal assets to meet earlier financial obligations. He has also maintained that the massive claims against him largely relate to personal guarantees given for loans taken by group companies, rather than loans directly borrowed by him. Several lenders, however, have objected to the NCLT approved plan. Financial institutions including HDFC Bank, Union Bank and LIC Housing Finance have indicated that they may challenge the decision, arguing that the recovery available to creditors is extremely low.

Despite the controversy, Chandra appears focused on making a fresh start. He has said he plans to meet his Switzerland based associate soon and explore investment opportunities in India and overseas. The businessman has also expressed confidence that he can rebuild his career, describing himself as a pioneer and saying he intends to continue working on new ideas and ventures. For Chandra, the next chapter could therefore look very different from his earlier media and business empire. Instead of rebuilding a large corporate group, his immediate focus appears to be on smaller investments, startups and new business opportunities while the legal battle surrounding the NCLT resolution continues.
