India Doubles 5G Radiation Limit to 10 W/m², Brings Rules in Line With Global Standards!
The move is aimed at improving network coverage and allowing telecom operators to expand 5G services more efficiently.
India is set to raise the permissible electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation limit for mobile network towers, a move that could have a direct impact on the way telecom companies expand 5G services across the country. Under the revised rules, the permitted power density for 5G base stations will rise from 5 watts per square metre to 10 watts per square metre. The change is expected to come into effect next month and is aimed at supporting the rapid growth of India's 5G network. The decision brings India's regulations closer to international benchmarks, including guidelines associated with the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).
For telecom operators, the higher limit could make network expansion more efficient. A tower operating within the revised limit may be able to provide stronger coverage in certain areas, potentially reducing the need for additional sites and helping companies manage the cost of building out 5G infrastructure. The word "radiation" may sound alarming, but the revised limit does not mean telecom towers can operate without restrictions. Operators will still have to comply with prescribed EMF norms and regulatory monitoring requirements. The change comes as India's 5G networks handle rapidly increasing data consumption.
With more smartphones, connected devices and high bandwidth services using mobile networks, operators need additional capacity and wider coverage. Increasing the permitted power density could give operators greater flexibility in network planning and help improve coverage in areas where signals are weaker. However, network quality depends on much more than tower power. Spectrum availability, tower placement, congestion, buildings and terrain all play a role in determining the actual experience for users. For consumers, the key question is whether the policy translates into fewer dead zones, stronger 5G signals and more reliable connectivity. As the revised rules take effect, telecom operators will be able to use the additional headroom to optimise India's rapidly expanding 5G infrastructure.
