UP Youth Get Major Digital Push! Yogi Cabinet Approves 25 Lakh Free Tablets Under ₹2,374-Crore Scheme
The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, with the state allocating ₹2,374.60 crore for the scheme in the 2026-27 financial year.
The initiative is aimed at giving students and trainees greater access to digital education, online learning resources and technology based training. Eligible beneficiaries include those pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate courses, diploma programmes, technical and health education, skill development courses and ITI programmes. According to the government, the scheme is not limited to academic learning. The tablets are also expected to help young people access online training programmes, employment opportunities, self-employment services and various government and non-government schemes.
The broader objective is to improve digital access while strengthening the employability skills of Uttar Pradesh's youth. The latest approval will add to the state's ongoing distribution of digital devices under the youth empowerment programme. Reports indicate that around 60 lakh tablets and smartphones have already been distributed to eligible beneficiaries under the scheme. The government has said that purchase orders for the newly approved tablets will be issued to institutions selected through the tender process. Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna said easier access to digital resources would improve the quality of training and help young people develop skills needed in the employment market.
The five-year scheme represents Uttar Pradesh's continued push towards using technology as a tool for education and employment. By providing devices directly to eligible students and trainees, the government aims to reduce barriers to accessing online resources, particularly for youth who may not have reliable access to personal digital devices. The Cabinet's decision also comes as the state government continues to focus on employment and skill development. The administration has positioned digital access as an important part of preparing young people for opportunities in both government and private sector employment, as well as self-employment. With 25 lakh additional tablets now approved, the initiative is expected to provide a significant digital boost to eligible youth across Uttar Pradesh and expand access to technology driven education and career opportunities.
