The driver was rescued safely, while firefighters brought the blaze under control and traffic was temporarily affected.
A major road accident disrupted traffic on the Mumbai Pune Expressway on Saturday after a tanker overturned near Khalapur in Maharashtra and caught fire. The incident created panic among motorists as flames and thick smoke were seen rising from the vehicle. According to preliminary information, the accident took place near kilometre 35 when the tanker’s brakes allegedly failed, causing the driver to lose control. The heavy vehicle overturned on the expressway before catching fire, prompting motorists to alert emergency authorities. Firefighters from the Khopoli fire brigade rushed to the spot and began efforts to control the flames.
The tanker driver, who was reportedly trapped inside the vehicle after the crash, was safely rescued by the emergency response teams. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities have been reported so far. However, the accident affected traffic movement on the busy expressway, with vehicles slowing down as authorities secured the area and worked to prevent the situation from escalating. Emergency personnel also focused on clearing the damaged tanker and ensuring that the surrounding stretch was safe for other motorists.
Traffic movement was subsequently restored on two lanes, although commuters were advised to proceed carefully through the affected section. The exact cause of the alleged brake failure is yet to be established. Authorities are expected to inspect the tanker and investigate the circumstances leading to the crash. The incident once again highlights the risks associated with heavy commercial vehicles travelling on the Mumbai Pune Expressway. A mechanical failure involving a tanker can quickly become a major hazard, making regular vehicle maintenance and timely safety checks particularly important.
