A 16 year old Dalit student in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai district died by suicide days after an alleged confrontation with the headmistress of a government school, prompting police to invoke provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The student, identified as P Nishanthi, had reportedly visited the Government Model Higher Secondary School in Usilampatti with her mother on August 24 to seek admission. According to the family’s complaint, the interaction with headmistress Vimala Devi became tense during the admission process. The girl’s mother, P Thavamani, alleged that she had folded her hands while requesting admission for her daughter. Nishanthi reportedly objected to her mother making the gesture and lowered her hands.

The headmistress allegedly reacted angrily, accused the teenager of arrogance and asked her to leave the school. According to the complaint, Nishanthi remained deeply upset after the incident. Her mother said the teenager refused food and appeared emotionally distressed after returning home. She was found dead at her residence the following day, August 25. Police initially registered a case concerning the student’s death before altering the FIR to include abetment of suicide under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Following the mother’s complaint and the allegations of caste based humiliation, provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act were subsequently added. The headmistress, Vimala Devi, has denied the allegations, including the accusation that she made casteist remarks.

She reportedly told investigators that the school did not immediately have a seat available and that she intended to make enquiries with the student’s previous school before deciding on the admission. The School Education Department has also conducted an inquiry into the incident, with a report submitted to the district authorities. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and the allegations against the headmistress. The case has sparked concerns over caste based discrimination and the treatment of students within educational institutions. The investigation will now determine whether the alleged remarks and conduct played a role in the teenager’s death and establish individual responsibility under the law. For the family, the incident has left unanswered questions about what happened during the admission interaction and whether the situation could have been handled differently. Authorities are expected to take further action based on the findings of the police and departmental investigations.
