Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has demanded legal action following a reported ‘purification’ ceremony at a venue in Uttarakhand where party president Mallikarjun Kharge had earlier addressed a public rally. Gandhi has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to direct the authorities to register an FIR under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. He has described the reported incident as deeply objectionable and linked it to the broader issue of caste based discrimination. The controversy erupted after a religious ritual was reportedly carried out at the rally venue following Kharge’s visit. Those involved in the ceremony reportedly described it as an effort to ‘purify’ the location, a description that has drawn sharp criticism from Congress leaders.

The incident has particularly attracted attention because Kharge is a senior Dalit leader and the president of the Congress party. Congress leaders have argued that conducting such a ritual after a Dalit leader addressed the gathering amounted to an insult and raised serious questions about social equality.
