Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma Releases ₹93.7 Crore Scholarship For Over 96,000 ST Students
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has released scholarship funds worth ₹93.7 crore for 96,812 Scheduled Tribe (ST) students through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.
The initiative is aimed at supporting students financially and helping them continue their education without facing additional economic pressure. The scholarship amount has been transferred directly into the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries, ensuring that the financial assistance reaches students through a transparent and streamlined process. The use of DBT is also expected to reduce delays and minimise the possibility of funds being diverted during the disbursement process. The scholarship programme is particularly significant for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, for whom educational expenses can become a major challenge.
Financial assistance can help beneficiaries meet costs related to tuition, books, accommodation, travel and other academic requirements. Speaking on the initiative, the Meghalaya government emphasised the importance of ensuring that students have access to opportunities irrespective of their financial circumstances. The move is part of broader efforts to strengthen education and provide greater support to students from tribal communities. The release of the funds also highlights the government's focus on using digital systems to deliver welfare benefits directly to beneficiaries.
By transferring the scholarship amount into students' accounts, authorities can improve transparency and make the process more efficient. For nearly one lakh ST students across Meghalaya, the scholarship support is expected to provide financial relief and encourage them to pursue higher education. The initiative also reflects the role of targeted educational assistance in improving access to learning opportunities for communities that may face economic and social barriers. With education remaining a key priority for Meghalaya's development, such scholarship programmes can play an important role in helping students continue their academic journeys and build better career opportunities.
