Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced two major welfare initiatives with a combined annual financial outlay of around ₹10,000 crore, aimed at providing additional support to families and expanding access to free public transport. The announcements include the Annapoorani Super Six scheme, under which eligible families will receive reimbursement for three LPG cylinders every year, and an expanded version of the Vetri Payanam scheme for women. The measures are being positioned as a major welfare push focused on reducing household expenses and improving mobility.
Under the Annapoorani Super Six scheme, eligible households will be reimbursed for the cost of three LPG cylinders annually, with the benefit set to begin from Pongal. The initiative is expected to provide relief to families facing rising household and cooking expenses. The government has also announced changes to the existing free bus travel programme through Vetri Payanam. From October 2, free travel for women will be extended to additional bus services and routes, with the scheme reportedly carrying no income-based eligibility restriction or limit on the number of journeys.
The expanded transport benefit will also cover transgender persons, widening the reach of the programme. The government said the initiatives are intended to strengthen social welfare while making essential services more accessible to beneficiaries across Tamil Nadu. With the two schemes together expected to cost around ₹10,000 crore every year, the announcements represent a significant financial commitment by the state. The implementation of the LPG reimbursement and expanded bus travel benefits will now be closely watched as eligible families and passengers prepare to access the schemes.
